This is a badge bit (
BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the
straw badge in
Woodland Care.
Now that you're starting to turn
trees into building materials, let's "think outside the sawmill". Maybe you don't have one yet. Or maybe it can't cut a big log you need to work with. Let's learn how to saw a log in half the long way!
Here's a pro doing it on a big spruce. When you get to your 392nd log you'll be this good as well:
Minimum requirements:
- Cut a log in half lengthwise
- At least 10" in diameter at the small end
- At least 8' long
- Roughly in half the whole way
- Splitting is allowed as long as:
- The surfaces are finished relatively flat
- The surfaces don't twist
- No sawmill allowed
Provide proof of the following as pictures or
video (<2 min):
- The log you're starting with
- Midway through sawing it in half
- Finished half logs with measurements if it isn't obvious they meet the size requirement
- Lengthwise view showing they are flattish and halved
