This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEM curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the Straw badge in Wood Heat.

Making maple syrup is a labor of love and requires some heat.  Let's build a big outdoor cooker for sap or perhaps other things!

Here's a gentleman making one from a 55 gallon drum:

Minimum requirements:
  - Build an outdoor evaporator
  - Enclosed fire
  - Fire access door
  - Grate to keep wood/coals off the bottom
  - Chimney
  - Pan(s) touch the flames
  - Smoke/flame is contained and goes up the chimney
  - Does not need to use rocket technology
  - Pans must be stainless steel
  - Some options include:
        - Maple syrup evaporator
        - Sorghum evaporator
        - Boiling bath for water bath canning

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
  - The place where your evaporator will go
  - Several points during construction
  - Finished evaporator
  - Fire going and evaporation underway
