Hey folks.

So i'm in the middle of designing a wood boiler for our place and I"m wondering if anyone out there has done or knows if it's possible to build a double barrel wood boiler to reduce emissions?
I'd love to kind of rocket stove hijack this bitch so it burns less wood, still heats well and pollutes less making everything safer all around.

The word "boiler" is throwing me.  Are you talking about a water or steam boiler?  Or are you talking about a wood burning stove made from a 55 gal drum that runs the smoke through a second stacked 55 gal drum before the smoke enters the chimney?

So what I'm looking to make is a double barrel stove that runs piping through the bottom barrel for hot water.

We're looking at putting in in floor heating so hot water would just be run through floor boards.

Not hooking it up to our own water or anything at this time, just strictly looking at heat for now.

Hi Samantha;  Maybe a drawing of what your designing?
Heating water with wood is problematical.  The safe way is with an open vented system.
Steam is wonderful but very scary stuff!   It can and will hurt you if water flashes to steam in a closed pipe.
Using a rocket stove to safely heat water is completely doable.
There are plans available to purchase from Matt Walker @  http://walkerstoves.com/index.html
Or free plans are available on line  @  https://permaculturenews.org/2012/11/23/rocket-stove-hot-water/

Ok. I'll draw.
I'm most definitely not looking at having a pressurized system if at all possible. Vented absolutely.

I don't want to turn this thing into a bomb.

Something like this?
I had watched a video of a fella who had run tubes along the bottom of his boiler I'll try to find to post.
Normally boilers have a water tank that goes around the fire but I'm not sure how that would work doing it this way?

I'm not looking to currently hook this up to the hot water in the house.

Just floor heating. The goal this year is to build something quick with 400-600 dollars that will last 2-3 years to keep the house warm and doesn't cost us a fortune in fuel to make it warm.

Our current oil bill (heating oil) is anywhere between 650-850 a fill and we fill it bout 4 times sometimes 5 a year.

So I'm not looking at long term at the moment - just short term to save up for long term to invest in something better in about 2-3 years, even if it's a second hand one for now.

Hi Samatha,

Yes, hot water and steam systems are out of my league due to the dangers of really serious injuries.  Go with Thomas's advice.

Will do.

Thanks John.

I just started really looking into this and I have a month to get it figured and 2 months absolute tops to get it done.

I have no idea as to the size of your house or when it it the stove will go, but , checking your drawing, if you remove the plumbing from your drawing, you will have a safer arrangement that should last a couple of years.

900 sq feet.

Looking at an outdoor boiler, not an indoor one.

I got an oil tank full of diesel fuel in the basement that currently heats the house.
Not comfortable having both a wood stove & a tank full of heating fuel in the same space this small like that.

I choose life. HAHA.

Ahh , all outside!   That makes a difference.
The second link I gave you for the Tim Barker design would work well .
Other than it is a J tube rocket stove, so burn time would be short... lots of trips out to refill the stove.
Using a batchbox burner would cut those trips in half.

With you design , if it is outside, why have a double barrel?  Are you wanting that heat for another space?

As I think about this further...
Since this application is strictly for heating your floor, why use water at all?
hydraulic oil can be safely heated over 400 F

I was thinking double barrel to create a rocket stove like effect rather than just a regular stove.

It appears this first like with Geoff might work really well for space & materials we have available.

Checked out the second link but unfortunately can't afford 120 for plan at the moment.

We're working on a very limited budget of 600 dollars and a time span of a month - 2 tops.

I'll check out this link and more info into hydrolic oil. Had no idea you can use it.

Would that still work with a rocket stove boiler set up?

I'll check it out. Did it work for you?
