I'm setting up a BSF system, with a screened breeding chamber, so it can self-sustain. But I live in zone 5, where it gets well below freezing much of the time, so I want to do this in my basement, so it can run all year. I do have small windows that give some natural light down there, but not a lot of it, and especially not in winter. I do have full spectrum grow lights, so I'm wondering if that will be sufficient to give the flies the light they want to breed.

(I may also need some supplemental heat, but I don't imagine the flies are as picky about how the temperature gets that way, as long as it's warm enough?)

Yes, but i think the breeding requirements are quite complex. I looked into this a few years ago an no-one seemed to have figured it out. More recently this has appeared:

I watched the video and that is a fantastic operation. They're going to change the world. I hope when we're all eating nutty BSFL bites, I can get past my 20th century tastes and get with the program.

But they didn't say much about the specifics of the breeding, and even if they are complex, what's needed at industrial scale for optimal efficiency isn't necessarily what you'd need in a home operation.

Do you have a particular reason for saying that the breeding requirements are complex? I've seen a bunch of folks online who seem to be successful just by building a reasonable looking enclosure and adding light, plants, some water, and keeping the humidity and temperature right, like 60% humidity and 70+ degrees. (Or is that what you meant by complex?)
