I just bought a bushel of concord grapes, and I want to save the seeds to plant, but everything I find on saving the seeds says they must be stratified in the fridge, but not allowed to freeze. I know grapes do well in colder climates (6 here), so there must be some way to direct plant in fall. But, I can't find anything on it. Has anyone here direct sown grapes in the fall?

I've had relatively poor results growing grapes over the years, and have tried different varieties, and one thing I've noticed is that I've never seen any of them sprout from seed. Most over the years have been European varieties, so maybe no surprise there. But I've also had concord growing up from my grandparents' and have recently been growing some other native varieties like muscadines and a "Jumbo" fox grape variety and I haven't seen any of their seeds sprout, though I haven't coaxed them. But several have fallen on the ground from me spitting them out and birds, and discarded grapes. Wild grapes are extremely prolific in the woods here, oddly enough.

Thanks, Jordan. I'd REALLY hoped to find (growing wild, here) strawberries, blueberries, pawpaws & grapes, but it was apparently not meant to be, lol. So, I keep trying to find ways to get stuff to grow on/between rocks... I've a few small patches of something that sort of resembles what could potentially become soil - maybe. And thought I might be able to coax a few grapes along, lol.

So there I was, trapped in the jungle. And at the last minute, I was saved by this tiny ad:
