Steve : More important is the rough texture of the newt to last layer to give the two layers a good binding surface. Some people use a squeeze or pump spray
bottle to wet down the old layer to get a good bond between layers, any dirt becomes part of the Cob. Some like to paint on a layer of thinnish Clay slip between
