A friend just gave me a dozen small strawberry plants, and I was thinking of planting them with my fig tree, just planted last June, about 4 feet tall. That bed already has a patch of french marigolds, and yarrow scattered around the edges, along with a few comfrey plants. Are there any compatibility issues anybody's aware of with that mix? I'm in north Florida, zone 8b.

Hi Tom,

I have a ground cover of Ozark Beauty strawberries around three giant fig bushes here in zone 6 Pittsburgh, PA and have had good success with both the figs and berries. Figs have a very prolific root system and the berries don't seem to mind as long as they get enough light through the branches. I did get some fruit rot last summer as we had a lot of rain in the fall and it was hard to pick the figs/berries fast enough as they swelled with water and rotted quickly, but other than that it's been fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm planning to plant lots of fig trees (along with pomegranates and persimmons) in the next few years, so I appreciate hearing what understories have been successful for others.

All of the following truths are shameless lies. But what about this tiny ad:
Heat your home with the twigs that naturally fall of the trees in your yard
