I have some Wine Cap mushroom spawn and wish to make more. I have been looking for a good sawdust recipe and have basically found nothing. Also I have wood pellet fuel for stoves, will that be acceptable as a source of sawdust?
Hi George.
Wine Caps are very easy to grow. Any hardwood sawdust will do. Last year I bought a bag of spawn, chipped up some alder that grows like a weed along my creek and made a fine bed. Enjoyed maybe five pounds or so of them. This year nothing is up yet but the bed is a solid mass of mycelium when scratch of the top quarter inch. I have read that wood pellets are a great way to increase your spawn. When they are made they are heated and so they are pretty much sterile in the bag. Just wet them down and add the spawn.
I had a small 4'x3' patch and expanded it in the first summer.
I bought a small bag of spawn. Then I mixed it in buckets with fresh wood chips, quadrupling it. I think it is a great idea. I watered it with non-chlolrinated water, moved the water back and forth from each bucket before starting my patch. Yes, any hardwood chips should work, but don't try to use big sticks, as they wont work. They usually grow best in conjunction with soil bacteria.

I have made a small bed (2'x6') at the side of my house and used the fuel pellets in it. Will see how it works out. Also I am going to try a small strawraised bed. I am also going to try some oysters in the near future. Straw is readily available in this area.
You ridiculous clown, did you think you could get away with it? This is my favorite tiny ad!
