I'm struggling with something. I visit family and read the labels on their food (not very pretty). They cook with teflon pans. Food from the "dirty dozen". Microwaving stuff. I can't say "that is bad for you" and "this is bad for you" cuz pretty soon they give up listening and I sound wacko.

I'd really like to have a solid feeling of what is really bad for you and what is kind of bad for you and what is possibly bad for you. I know for most of these sorts of things there are studies that can prove it both ways

I'm thinking something like this:
(Please realize that I'm totally making up the numbers on this rating scale)

Units of toxicity = one standard cigarette = 1C

One serving of pesticide ridden grapes = 10C
Microwaving your coffee = 0.5C
Meal cooked on a new teflon pan = 10C
Meal cooked on an old flaking teflon pan = 20C
Staining the deck = 80C
Mowing the lawn with a 4 stroke push mower = 5C
Mowing the lawn with a 2 stroke push mower = 50C
Transfat potato chips = 5C
Roundup ready corn tortilla = 1C
Roundup desiccated wheat tortilla = 5C
Grass fed burger = 1C
Conventional burger = 10C

If I had a reference like this (even if it's only half right), I'd be able to focus my attention on the things that are more likely to kill me and the people I care about.

Thoughts? Examples out there I can just check out?

Thanks!

Well, you're certainly right that lifestyle matters, and food matters a lot.

I've been permie for 5 or 6 years and organic and sustainable for 40 years.

I'm a doctor (an optometrist) so I have a substantive amount of training regarding the risks of radiation, ionizing radiation, uv, microwaves, lasers, etc etc etc.

On this single topic, I hope I can shed some light for you.

Microwaves, and microwaving your food, are not bad for you.

I have been watching the literature for a long time and I have seen zero convincing studies that microwave ovens, and their use, the food heated in them, are bad for you.

This guy is pretty plugged in and lays it out pretty nicely:

Now, Monsanto and Bayer and frankencorn and high fructose corn syrup and bad lifestyle and the larger medical/pharmacology system we have--that shit will kill you if you let it.
