plumbing
instruction, regulation, insurance, safety, etc

I wish there was a way to wander out into the woods and find stainless steel pipe growing on the stainless steel pipe tree.  Then our plumbing systems could align with our permaculture values of natural building. Instead, we “make the best of it” and contemplate which paths are the least toxic.

Otis has deep respect for plumbing skills.

Would refilling a berkey water filter count for putting collected water through a berkey filter? I would like to lean towards yes.

Forgive my ignorance. Is Check a Septic Tank Level (Tiny List) a combo with Homesteading's Check Septic Tank Status?

I think that should be a strictly homesteading thing, and not a plumbing thing.  Making the change now.

I want to get my sand badge.

This weekend I removed a pedestal sink, replaced it with a vanity, repaired a broken P-trap, removed the new P-trap, cut the pipe, and built a new P-trap and pipe out of black pipe stuff and stinky glue so that it fit the new sink drain (1.5" further from wall and 3" higher - I thought these things were supposed to be standard!!!).  Put it all together.  Added a faucet.  tested for leeks.

Am I right in thinking these badges might apply?

Anything else this qualifies for?

Hi R, I think it sounds like you did the "Repair a P trap" BB twice, the "Replace a faucet" BB and also likely the Straw BB for "Replace a sink".  Doing Sand badges more than once can give you credit for Straw and Wood badges but it doesn't look like that's how the plumbing badge works.

I came looking for a BB because I have to fix a toilet that won't flush properly, but darn, it's not on the list. Surely that's a pretty common thing to need to do? Am I missing something?

Hmm, I'd take pictures as you go regardless.  Once you figure out how it's not flushing properly, maybe it will fit under the "fix a leaking toilet" one.  Maybe not...

Luckily there's the "plumbing oddball" BB in the Straw level that you can submit it in.  Then you'll get points but they won't help you get your Sand badge.  But by posting your awesome work over there we might decide we need to make a new BB.

I believe I just earned the Straw badge!

These are posted in the order of how they appear in my BB list.  I accidentally did 7 extra points in the process so I'm saving some of my approved Sand (duplicate) and Straw BBs for a potential Wood submission in the years to come.

Replace a sink - 1 pt
Install a drain - 8 pts
Replace a pressure tank - 1 pt
Extend water to a new location (shower) - 2 pts
Extend water to a new location(sink) - 2 pts
Oddball for manual pump in house plumbing system - 6 pts
Set up sophisticated rainwater collection system - 5 pts
Oddball for greenhouse pump and pressure tank - 10 pts

Total 35 points

Staff note (Opalyn Rose) :

Congratulation on another Straw Badge!
