Set up a Downhill Water Siphon - PEP BB plumbing.sand.tiny.siphon

This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Plumbing.

In this Badge Bit, you will set up a siphon from a water source downhill to a location, and move at least 20 gallons. Indoor sources are ok. (Note that this BB is part of a 6-part choose your own adventure list BB called the Tiny List. You must complete six Badge Bits in the Tiny List.)

Who keeps taking baths here? Are you doing BB's again?

Water (I'm rounding down)
6" deep x 47" long x 21" wide = 5922 cubic inches = 3.4 cubic feet = 25 gallons

I used a long tube to the "pond" BB in the backyard, and established the siphon with a squeeze bulb pump.

I am going to try to hook up our gutters to drain water into my pond but need some more manpower to move our water storage barrels out of the way. First, I am going to make sure that my water collection barrel and drain pipes are working. My test was very successful, the mix and match pipes and tubes I found connected well enough to drain well. The 25ish gallons of water that was sent down them drained in less than 5 minutes.

Left this sub pump container outside and it filled up with water. It was time to use the sub pump container, so I needed to move the water to a more useful spot. ( Which happened to be one of my frog pond projects.)

I used an old garden hose, and emptied it into the old frog pond. Based on the measurements there was ~27gal

We store water for power outages in 50gal barrels and it had been a year or two since they were emptied and refilled so I worked on that a bit. I used our old siphon to drain most of the water into our ditch (estimate 40gal) and I dump the rest now that I can actually move it.

I have several barrels of water which I filled before our irrigation was shut off for the season. I needed some today to try to seal a tiny pond, which had a conduit running an inch below where I stopped digging so didn’t work out :(

Regardless, the siphon was relatively easy to start and got me well over 20 gallons.
I didn’t want to muck about with air bubbles nor having to suck on the hose, so I submerged the entire thing, closed the valves on the Y, lifted the end out, and opened the valves to fill my vessels.

The white bucket is 3.5gal, the blue jug is 7gal, and the black tub is somewhere north of 14gal.
