Hi All,
I have an problem that I am hoping that someone  here may be able to help. I live in a city & have to deal with both neighbors & stray cats. I currently have a stray that is adorable and loving (esp. if you are filling a food bowl) that has been hanging around for a little over a year, she's a shorthaired dark torti. Originally I was told she was not a stray, but a neighbor's pet so we didn't go through with the "trap-spay-release," however, she is not. Fast forward to now, and the guy across the street is going to start trapping on Monday and any cats he gets are going to animal control (he doesn't care if he catches other neighbors pets either, anything caught is going to the animal control truck). He has a shed that doesn't have a door & the local cats have decided to make that their litter box. I cannot convince them to put a door on their shed, I have absolutely tried. The animal control here takes to the humane soc. & if they deem the animal un-adoptable, then they euthanize. To confound the problem further she is pregnant, and due to give birth soon, maybe 1-2 weeks. She really is a sweet cat, and I can pet her, and she is really into leg rubs...if we could find a farm to take her to, that would commit to feed her if the mice weren't enough, she would be a great mouser. I've seen her jump over 5 ft from sitting to catch birds, and I'm sure she is just as skilled at mousing. I'm just not certain she ever wants to be a house cat, she has been out for so long. If anyone here is in the south central PA region, that has a barn, and would be interested in a good mouser, or has room to foster and see if she is able to be in a home and an adoptable kitty, I would greatly appreciate if you could let me know. I've contacted the local rescues here, and they won't touch a cat that they think might be too feral to adopt, they'll take her weaned kittens, but that's it. I really don't know how she would handle the transition to inside. I would take her on myself, but I am just dealing with the loss of my 15 yr old fur-baby, and still have a 3 yr old that is really aggressive to strays. My house would not be a safe haven, cause the stray and my young one are extremely aggressive towards each other. I really appreciate anyone reading this, and taking the time to even consider going out of their way to help this situation end well, I have no expectations, but only hope that someone in the permie world might have a solution to offer.
Sincerely,
Denise

I once had a similar type of neighbor.

I simply made them indoor cats as the fight would of ended with a person being harmed over an essential peeing contest kind of thing.  Try to get along with the neighbors as best one can.

If you can find a no kill shelter this would be best but may be very difficult to do as these are becoming harder and harder to find.  A pregnant cat that will need medical work will be very hard to find a home for.  Perhaps a farmer would of have interest.  Maybe check out some farmers.  It is one thing to call them and another to stop and visit and have a discussion.  While the discussion with one farmer may not be the last step, they all know each other and in that perhaps you can find a home.

Best of luck to you.

My friends cats live a life of leisure, that most of us can only imagine. Free food, free home , thousands of climbing surfaces in an overcrowded house.

One of them was an outdoor cat who arrived in horrible condition, to a shelter in the US. His hair was matted and he was thin. He has had many opportunities, and it's clear that he does not want to go outside. He may have been low man on the totem pole out there.

The other, much smaller cat was adopted as a kitten. His predatory instinct is much greater, than that of his formally feral housemate. The place used to be overrun with silverfish. They are never seen any more. Lloyd pursues them relentlessly. If a house fly or mosquito gets into the house, he will run and take a flying leap off of furniture, in order to strike them in mid-air.

Well, that got a little rambling. My point, and I do have one, is that cats don't know if they should be indoor or outdoor cats. If they find conditions agreeable, they don't need a very large territory.

If I were closer I would take her. Mother cats are the easiest to move, as long as they have their kittens with them they are happy. Plus I do enjoy having kittens around.

First off, I want to thank everyone that replied. I appreciate you taking your time to offer insight and suggestions, I really wasn't sure if anyone would bother, for what is probably such a common problem (a stray) minus the neighbor difficulties. Harry, I agree with you, if she were an indoor cat this problem would disappear, and it turns out another neighbor may have developed a soft spot for her, and might be willing to take her in. I'll talk with her this weekend. Dale, my situation is (was) much the same as yours, my older girl I just lost was a long haired stray who has been out on her own awhile that was taken in by a "rescue" (a house with a ton of cats that had taken over it). She chose us, and became the princess she was meant to be when she came here. She still always liked the yard, but she never went far. Then we took on a stray very young kitty that came up to our front porch who was part feral, and she is a silverfish killer too! Leora, thank you, I just gave my husband permission to drive cross-country to Alaska with a pregnant cat without me, but alas, he for once is not willing to make that trip! Hopefully, I can explain to all neighbors involved without inciting an all-out war. I am hoping that my neighbor takes her inside, and then I won't have to worry about the trapping. I still feel for any other local that lets their cat wander, because the trapper does not have any regard for pets let to roam. My only solace is that if any "pet" cats go to the humane soc., they should be identified quickly as adoptable, which would give the family that lost a pet time to find them, but I feel terrible about the panic I know they will have when their cat doesn't come home at night. Again, thank you all for the comments, and I am not closing any doors, so if someone out there wants a mouser for their homestead or barn (of course I would come back and take weaned kittens to re-home so someone isn't stuck with a whole family) I think that is still an option, I don't think my neighbor "wants" to take her in, more that she feels she must.
Sincerely,
Denise

Get in touch with PAWS of PA.  http://www.pawsofpa.org/  I used to live in Mechanicsburg and know that they are a no-kill rescue group.  The folks I dealt with were very dedicated.  They do both regular house pet adoption and barn cat placement (at least they did 10 years ago).

Hi Jessica,
Thank you, I'll contact them on Monday if we haven't found a solution. I'm going to talk w/the neighbor that was thinking about helping her out, and try to explain the situation in the least awful way possible. I.e. I'll put it as some neighbors in conjunction with animal control are going to start trapping. That way we can hopefully avoid a neighborhood war. I'm hoping she is just willing to bring her in, its asking a lot, because we don't know if she will use a litter box, but that would be the best option. I really appreciate the info, and I will check into it.
Thank You,
Denise

Update, Thank you Jessica, I did contact PAWS, but never heard back, they are apparently inundated from a rescue of an estimated 140 cats found on a homesite in Lebanon County. I found a local family that are experienced at fostering, and were actually starting to look for this exact situation. They are fostering her, and feel they might be able to place kittens without even having to go through a shelter, although I will keep with them and help if  that is needed-we will find homes for all of them. I hit my deadline, and the neighbor that was going to trap respected me enough to wait until I said she was in her new home before he set traps. (I had asked him to give me till today, and he agreed, but he didn't say what time today he would set them) So all in all, this seems to be the best outcome, she and her soon-to-be babies are safe, and will be delivered with the help of an experienced woman. I thank each and everyone that took the time to care or comment, I appreciate all of it, and I'm so happy that this has what looks to be a really good outcome for all, the babies and the momma.
Regards,
Denise

The (6) babies were born today and momma & the babies are all doing well. We've already had a good bit of interest in the kittens on a local neighborhood only site, so hopefully we will be able to place them all in nearby homes, without involving a shelter. If anyone close to Harrisburg PA is looking for a kitten in about 10-12 weeks please contact me! Thanks, Denise
