Summary

part 2 of a 2 part podcast.

Paul and others continue the round-up of PTJ 2024

There's a bit more talk about the root cellar and some issues with building it, and how to avoid those issues.
Paul describes the construction of the cellar with some input from J.R. and Katie.  J.R said it was a lot of work but also a lot of fun.

Sky Huddleston started the round door project.  He had some interesting ideas on how to build it, and how to engineer the wall to hang it, using wood.  Paul had imagined there would be plenty of steel involved to make it strong enough.  Sky also brought along the hinge he had made which Paul says is glorious.  The door is now put away waiting for more work.

The Red cabin RMH has been upgraded with various things which Paul and Uncle Mud discussed. These include a cob hat and a cob cape which encloses the vertical exhaust, which it's hoped will help with the cold plug problem.  There's also a nifty priming port to prime the vertical exhaust, which Mud installed and which has a metal gadget which holds a bunch of paper or similar which you light and insert into the vertical exhaust when lighting the RMH.

Other rocket projects included the rocket oven, which is being made using the box from an old electric stove complete with door.  This will get sealed up so it will become a white oven, heated by a J tube rocket.  Also there was an experiment using a rocket to heat the kiddy pool, as a precursor to making the rocket hot tub.  It took 90 minutes to heat to hot tub temperature but it's not insulated.  They have several ideas for how to improve the heating time.

There was work on the Bob line.  Katie pointed out the sunshades tend to sag on the line and thus lose their effectiveness, It turns out that some work has been done to remedy that but also the shades can sag between the lines.  Paul feels the individual shades could be smaller so they sag less.  They also mention the "heat protocol" which basically means when the temperature is above 95°F people working outside get slushies every hour, which are very popular.  Paul mentions someone recorded that when the outside was 100°, it was only 68° inside.

The yoga yurt gained a cob floor.  Paul was initially skeptical about this, he said it would be 20x as much work as a normal wood floor.  However, Micheal Otten has a technique to make a thin cob floor only about 1" thick, so although it was more work it wasn't as much as Paul thought.  The finished floor, according to Paul, looks dreamy.

Lastly Katie talks about willow feeders.  Repairs were made to the existing 4 feeders and they looked at ways to solve the issues so they would need less work in future.  They also made a new willow feeder as a surprise for Steven, near where he has his acre.
