Hi Everyone,

I imagine this has been answered before, but I could not find a post on this site.

For a parcel of land I am looking to purchase, the power lines are <500 ft from the property. What would it roughly cost to bring power to the property?

I have seen some sources say the power company will do this for free (as so close), while other sources suggest it might be $$$. The property is in El Dorado county (CA).

Grateful for any advice.

Many thanks,
Nick

It really varies from one power provider to the other.  In one instance I was quoted the first 100 feet was free.  It was a $1000/100 feed after that.  That covered power lines, poles, and labor to install.  Sadly, most power companies have a monopolist control in the area they provide services, but you can call some electricians in the area.  They will tell you if they can or cannot; and what to expect to pay.

Nick, to get the most accurate idea, contact the utility company and ask for an estimate.

My estimate is $10,000. I know that if it was smack dab in the middle of downtown with zero cable run it would still cost $1,000
I recommend contacting your supplier and asking for an estimate but even then they would need to come and see the condition of the site to give a final figure.
Electricity/Gas– Pacific Gas & Electric 1-800-743-5000
Electricity/Gas – Sacramento Municipal Utility Dist. 1-888-742-7683

Price out how much it would cost for you to personally/privately run 400Amp of split phase power underground/overhead and then you will know the cost.

Total Distance = 500ft
Distance per pole = 125ft(urban) or 300ft(rural)
Number of poles = 4(urban) or 2(rural)
Price per pole =
Total Pole Cost =
Price per foot of electrical cable =
Total Cable Cost =
Price per foot of trenching/underground =
Total Trenching Cost =
Tree/Land Clearing =
Regular Connection Fee = $1,000
Total Cost = Regular  Fee + Cable Cost + Pole/Trenching Cost + Tree/Land Clearing

Let us know how this turns out.  Do be aware that if you bring then in, you will be allowing them access to your land in the future. A person in my area has A high power tower in his front yard.

The power company will also ask for a signed easement that gives them all kinds of rights.

Almost everyone who has rural power does this and it follows the land meaning when you sell the land this easement goes with the property and is on the deed.

It wasn't my idea to go to some crazy nightclub in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted to stay home and cuddle with this tiny ad:
