a couple questions about information on the podcasts re Sepps
project.
1. In the last podcast there was mention about planting the
hugel berm, and it was said that all the larger seeds were planted along the bottom of the hugel beds, poked in, including corn, beans, squash, melons, etc. If the corn was planted here and there along the beds in this fashion, would it properly pollinate well
enough to produce a corn crop? I've always been taught that corn had to be close as it is wind pollinated.
2. It was also mentioned in the last podcast that Jerusalem artichokes were planted on the top of the berms and that potatoes were planted here and there in t he berms..I can see the potoatoes but it does appear to me that the harvest would have to be away from permanent crops so as not to disturb the
roots of permanent crops, however the Jerusalem artichokes at the top of the berms would be of a concern to me. Jerusalem artichokes in my
experience are very very invasive and they tend to migrate a few feet into the soil very quickly, so it seem to me that they would completely take over the entire berm below where they are planted.
I know that you may not have any answers to these questions as this was
Sepp's planting and he may not have explained WHY, but it just seems wrong to me and I thought a
thread for discussion of these two things might be helpful
