Llamas and their camelid cousins are popular additions to homesteads and small farms. The are kept for fiber, pack animals, livestock guardians, manure, even for milk and meat. If you are interested in llamas, alpacas, camels, vicuña, or guanacos, this forum is the place to share, discuss, and ask about these amazing animals.

Leigh, thank you for an informative thread and for making the new forum.

I have always been interested in llamas because one of my uncles brought me back some jewelry from Peru which had llamas on them.

Thanks, Anne! Llamas seem to be really popular right now. I had one a number of years ago, a young male that I sadly lost to failure-to-thrive-syndrome. I didn't have a resource like this at the time, and it certainly would have helped.

We've just bought a pair of alpacas so this is very welcome. Ours are for mowing and fibre with a dash of 'so fluffy!' thrown in.

we have 5 female alpacas (no males)  4 of which were mated last year and are due any time.  We have witnessed some strange behaviour where 2 of the female alpacas are mounting the younger non pregnant female, is this a possibly sign of imminent labour?
