I just planted this tree last August and its coming up gangbusters.
It went from a tiny green brush to a flowering green bush in just this last month.
I'm very happy,  but I'm concerned that its flowering so young.
Should I ,uh, "deflower" it, to encourage it to establish itself instead of reproducing?

Whenever I see stuff like this, I think of Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert. A healthy Joshua tree will only make a flower on one of its branches for any given year... But an unhealthy (dying) Joshua tree will flower on all of its branches, all at once and die... On one hand it’s kinda sad, and yet, very beautiful on the other.

I suspect your little tree is overly eager or climate confused. I would dead head it and try to get it to redirect its focus on growth vs reproduction. I deadhead all my young orchard trees if they blossom too young, as well as other plants when I want them to focus on growth and root development rather than reproduction, and they all do fine. Sometimes grafted trees think they are much older than they are, and will try to blossom way before they are sturdy enough to bear fruit/seeds.

Good Luck!

Thank you Paul, you have confirmed my worst fears.
It will be a while before I get back over there, but if it is still in bloom, I will deadhead it...if I can force myself to!

It’s perfectly ok to enjoy the flowers before you deadhead it (a bee needs to eat too). The main benefit comes from removing the fruit/seed anyway, that is what redirects the most energy and piles the weight on the branches. That little tree is stunningly beautiful to say the least. Anyone that can’t see that should be checked for a pulse... LOL!!!

Thank you Paul, you have eased my mind.
I feel more comfortable both  admiring and caring for this tree, which is a gift from my older sister.

See where your hand is? Not there. It's next to this tiny ad:
