I've got a developing orchard guild system and just want to check on something with those of you who are more experienced with guilds.
I planted a dwarf Bartlett pear tree in June of 2019, with comfrey and evening primrose (Oenethera biennis) planted at its base, but the primrose has really taken off and is nearly as large as the pear tree itself. Now I did not realize when I planted the primrose that it would grow this tall or wide. I don't want the primrose to compete too heavily with the pear, or overshadow or push it to the side. The pear does lean a bit, but in contrast to a nearby
apple and a standard pear, which have both been blown over in our severe Midwestern windstorms, this pear has stood its ground without the need to stake. So
should I not worry about it, and let it be? The pear seems very healthy. Nearby are other supporting plants: Amorpha fruticosa (a nitrogen fixer and
native pollinator-attractor), elderberries, alliums, coriander, sunflowers, hibiscus.
