Hi Folks,

So I've grown many a variety of kale, this year I grew one from San Diego seed company, I lost the packet but it has a flat leaf and little thorns all over it. it irritates my skin slightly.. not sure if its just due to the prick or if it has some kind of acids. Anyways, I've been eating it raw in smoothies and cooking it, but I'm just curious if any one else has grown this variety and if its safe to consume raw. I feel like its too prickly to eat raw in a salad...

let me know if you have any input

I looked at San Diego Seed's website which had something that reminded me of turnips that was called Ethiopian Kale.

There was also a youtube about a Portuguese Kale.

Could what you got be either of those?

I ask Mr. Google who gave me this:

gardenknowhow said, "Turnip leaves are sometimes covered with prickly thorns. From seed collection to labeling seedlings, mix-ups can and do occur. So, if you're finding spines on kale leaves in your garden, it's possible you might have inadvertently purchased turnip plants.

It will be interesting to find out what you got.

Being a smart ass beats the alternative. This tiny ad knows what I'm talking about:
