I don't think it's just one person's computer causing issues with the site, Paul, because I've had the same problem, and only with this site.

mine does that sometimes and sometimes not.  When it is acting funny I just type my post in something else, (regular email or word processor) and copy past it.  Works great and is better than that typing can't see jumping around thing.  never thought to complain before.

Please describe the problem in as much detail as you can.  And tell me what browser you are using.

Just to chime in...I use Mozilla/Firefox & I have an iMac. No problems with anything jumping around. Every now & the I get that IP message about my posting being less than 60 seconds ago, but it's no biggie & doesn't happen very often.

I am using IE8 and I was using Chrome last week and it did the same thing. Basically the edit box will not allow you to type into it normally. I am typing into the message box right now and so far it is fine, but when I was editing my chicken post and removing the part about needing to find some land it jumped around so bad that I simmply could not edit and had to leave it for another time.

When you click in the box to start to type it jumps up in the message and then back down...ok now it's doing it here. I guess it starts when you hit the bottom of the edit box. It will not scroll. It bounced back up to it's original setting and you need it to scroll, you want to type down below that but it wants to be back up to starting point. So it jumps with every keystroke. I have to hold the sidebar down to read what I wrote and make sure it is readable.

Oh it stopped there for a bit and ....nope now it's jumping again. After I hit enter for anew paragraph. It seems it jumps as you are typing on the bottom line of the edit box. I am typing without being ablle to really see what I have written because it willnot stay scrolled down.

Well .... I just tried all sorts of stuff and it didn't go crazy for me.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong.  Do you have a simple recipe that I can follow so I can see it?

I just click to reply to a message like always and sometimes when I type it jumps around and other times like now it doesn't. Cannot give you anything more than that. I noticed last time that it started as I filled the message box and I needed to scroll to keep typing. I am at that spot right now and it is fine. I am using IE 8 today.

I wonder if you can get the problem to happen repeatedly if you click on the "report to moderator" thing?

I had a major problem with this recently and occasionally in the past. can't see what I am typing because every time I hit a key it moves the screen. makes me dizzy ops: I was inserting type after pasting several  image codes in the post. I went ahead and posted although I wasn't finished. came back to edit/finish and was able to type some then it mysteriously started again. wouldn't be that big o deal if I wasn't such a fumble fingers and have to constantly go back and correct myself.

Once I can get it to go crazy for me I can start to try and fix it.

If there is any way any of you can get it to fail every time for you, that will be a big help!  Well, that and telling me so that I can see it happen.

ok. I just happened to type a long post "again.....sorry...I know they are probably boring to most) but it happened to me again at the end. at some point, as my type started to run off the page it started going nuts. could fix it for a second by moving my curser elsewhere and then for some reason would go back to doing it. the last time I did it was on the kimchi thread that had lots of photos that took up bulk space in the typing window. lets see if I can make it do it on this post...................................................................

the "hello helloo" type in the middle was inserted after the bottom type to see if I could screw it up again. it went in just fine that time. it appears that at some point the type reaches a spot that starts making it flutter......

kathleen/others- is that what happens to you?

I also went back and broke up the "......." because they made the post a mile wide without any spaces.....don't know if that is relevant.

Well, I tried to make lots and lots of lines and then I tried to make them without any spaces so they were too long (they just wrapped).  It seemed to keep working.

what it seems to take is a long thought out post... maybe a time limit as well as length of post?

Well, I kept an edit window open for many hours and whenever I thought of it, I would come type more stuff.  Nothing went goofy.

Are you folks that are experiencing the problem - are you logged in forever or on a timer?

I am logged in forever, with poor connection that often quits me.  This has happened with both my windoxs XP and my vista machine, if that has anything to it.

I've tried lots of stuff and I can't get it to be anything other than rock solid.

Hmmmm .....  maybe there is  a common browser plugin causing the problems?  Are any of you that are having the problems using any kind of plugin?

I'm using IE8. And it seems to want to start acting up at the end of a long post, when the type has reached the bottom of the message box/window. When it trys to scroll up, to show the line I'm typing, thats when it seems to want to start acting up and bouncing around, hiding the line of type instead of scrolling upward like its suppost to.

Oh, I'm a permanent signin.

Does that help any?

I finally got IE running.  And I filled in all of the above.  And everything still seems rock solid.

Oh wait!  It's now freaking out!  It's an IE thing!  So the short term fix is to use firefox!

So it seems that the thing that causes the problem is to use IE and have enough lines in your post so that the scroll bar is activated.

The solution is over my head.  Fortunately, thanks to my other site, I know a guy that has written books on this sort of thing.  Eric Pascarello.  I've sent him an email asking him for help.

So we'll be the town folk.  Eric will be played by clint eastwood.  Maybe our town will be saved from the evil microsoft.

Some changes have been put in, but the problem still exists for me - although I think it could be caching problems on my end.  Does the problem still exist for you all?

Paul, not sure why but my posts keep being lost due to "already submitted" and they are not...since I seldom save before I send they are often lost forever...few I retype back again...if anyone wonders why I am so quiet these days...

I've experienced that a few times too.

I'm looking forward to switching to the new software.

In the meantime, I've been using firefox.  When I hit the back button, my stuff is still there.

I don't know if this would help or not, but Leah, do you update your browser (Mozilla/Firefox) when it prompts you to do so? I use Firefox at home and at the barn. In the last year, I would say I've been prompted by Firefox to update at least 3 or 4 times, on each computer. I couldn't tell you how many times I've updated Firefox since I've been using it. At least twice a year in 3 years before 2009, on my computer alone. I've never seen that "dinosaur" icon on any computer other than yours. Dunno about that. Firefox has always had the globe since I've been using it.

I don't post as often as you & others do. Probably the more often a person posts, the more opportunities they have to find trouble. I mentioned before that the only problem I ever have on the permies posts is that IP message. Usually I hit the back button and my post is still there. When that happens, sometimes I wish the forum had a "save it in drafts" option. Then maybe we wouldn't have to copy and paste. Could just his save in drafts and come back to it later.

I can type a message in for about two paragraphs and then it always starts being difficult. I can type it in but the moment I pause it jumps back to the acceptable part. I thought you were trying to limit the length of posts, a sort of two paragraph twitter.

With persistence it's possible to do longer posts but it's a pain in the neck, as it's necessary to keep scrolling down to where you left off and if you correct something it's a real yo-yo to get to it  and click on it, scroll back down to it, erase it scroll back down put the right letter in, scroll back down look for the next problem. RUnning  Explorer Windows XP.

With the forum software, is there any way to set the scrollpane variables in a way that will force the appearance of the scrollbar?
