I will be spending some time in Pinehurst this spring and planning to offer a plant walk. A plant walk is where an herbalist/forager takes a small group out and teaches them to identify medicinal and edible plants and discusses their use. Pinehurst is really nice in the spring, when the mountains I call home are still frozen. The date is to be determined, but it will be when the mullein is coming up. We will spend an hour or so walking a very easy trail, then have a question and answer session for another hour or so. It will be very informal and laid back. The cost will be $50 per person, with a couple/family discount. Email me at judson@judsoncarroll.com if you would like to be notified when the date is set (probably in about 3-4 weeks, depending on the weather).

Pinehurst is a unique area in the sandhills of NC. Known as The Home of Golf in America, most people only know it for the golf courses, grand old hotels, restaurants, theater and shopping, although the near-by pottery (Seagrove/Jugtown) is a wonderful tradition and there are some great historic sites. My family has long ties to the area…. 200+ years. What few people know is that the sandhills of NC host a huge variety of medicinal and edible plants. My grandfather knew this and helped build the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve. I spend some time in the area each year and do quite a bit of wildcrafting and foraging away from the golf courses.

I hope to do nature walks in several regions of NC - the mountains, foothills, piedmont, coastal plain, river basins, sandhills, swamps, sounds and coast - but, I can’t think of any place nicer to be in the early spring than Moore County. It is convenient to Charlotte, Fayetteville, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, etc - close to the center of the state. And, one nice aspect is that if you are interested in herbs but your other family members are not, the area offers enough that they can have fun enjoying their interests while you are out in the woods with me… golf, spa, shopping, dining, equestrian events, bowling, theater, galleries, history, etc. Hopefully, we can make this an annual event.

Ahh man, if you are ever find yourself in upstate New York and have a similar offer I'd be sure to join you. I hope you find some people that are seeking guidance in their learning.

If this happens in the future as an event, I'll keep my eye out on excuses to take a small vacation.

It looks like it's time for me to write you a reality check! Or maybe a tiny ad!
