It was hard to decide where to post this
thread because it deals with bugs
chickens and
compost.
Fungus gnats like to
feed on decomposing plants and their fungus. The best food to use is crop residue from legumes like beans, peas, alfalfa. If you have a source of leguminous plant material and some
chickens then fungus gnats are easy and worth it.
Directions:
1 fill a bin with the residue and some moisture
2 wait until there are some fungus gnats seen flying or hopping on the stuff (1-2 weeks)
3 dump it out on a cement pad and spread it a bit
4 say "chick chick chick"
5 put the same contents back in the bin and repeat steps 1-5 until the substrate will no longer support fungus gnats
IMO this is the best way to raise young free ranged chicks because they get good food with
water in it so dehydration is less of an issue. Big
chickens can eat them too but they will have to spend more time on them to fill their gizerd.
Diversified Food forest maker . Fill every niche and you'll have less weeds (the weeds are the crop too). Fruit, greens, wild harvest, and nuts as staple. Food processing and preservation are key to self self-sufficiency. Never eat a plant without posetive identification and/or consulting an expert.
