Rocket Mud Oven Update; Please Note

Do not use any metal containing zinc, this includes galvanized tin.
The pipe to be used is black stove pipe.

This is the oven built on native soil, and the floor has yet to be built up. The finish is traditional lime render in 3 coats. Oven door was insulated with clay. Here I am preparing to burn out the basket weave of the dome.

Burning out the basket weave.

Cleaned everything up, put a last coat of render, allowed a few days for it to cure, and then cooked up some pizza!

View of the burn chamber.

Temps reached 400 F.

I will be continuing the construction of the Out door Kitchen with an additional rocket stove, or two, for my Cast Iron Dutch Ovens, build up the floor using lime. Eventually do wattle and daub walls, add my campaign cupboards, etc.

Will add pics as work moves forward.

Many thanks to Max and Aaron for their help on this project.

Great post, Kate.
Excellent photos.

Great details on zinc, render, temperature, weave, etc.

Probably a lot more people will be inspired to try to make this happen in their locations now.
Good work.

I'd love to do something like this. In the front yard there's a 3' post from a satellite dish I've been thinking of incorporating into one.

I don't see another vent so I'm guessing the door is never blocked completely but is there a 'partial' door?

Hi Bob

There is actually a stove pipe vent on top of the oven, as well as a small grill for a pot, that can act as additional venting if required.

The vent stove pipe had to be removed/blocked, and the grill also had to be blocked to allow the burning out the basket weave.
I haven't a good clear pic as yet of the whole of the rocket oven to show all its parts.
Will post such pics as soon as time permits.

Been awful busy/distracted with moving my daughter off to College.
