Each week at the farmer's market we put a bouquet of flowers on the table. We do it as a conversation starter, and to keep things from being boring with the same old vegetables every week. Today's bouquet was oyster plant seed heads... All day long, people kept saying to us over and over again "I've never seed those before". It was all we could do to keep a straight face... They are one of the most widespread wildflowers in our valley. They are currently going to seed all over everywhere. In the flowerbeds, along the sides of the road, in every vacant lot. The whole valley is filled with oyster plant seed heads today.
Most often when people tell me that there are no bees, it ends up being an issue with observation. The observer didn't stay in one place long
enough and quiet enough to notice what was actually going on with the bees. How many species of
native bees were present? If the honeybees weren't visiting sunflowers or mesquite, then what plants were more popular? It seems to me, that honey bees are most interested in flowers that produce nectar, and not much interested in plants that produce only pollen. I rarely see honeybees on sunflower. Mostly I see solitary bees on sunflower.
