Wolf River apple - Will apples get larger each year as the tree grows older?

Hi,

I have a 5 year old Wolf River apple tree that I'm allowing to bear fruit for the first time.  The tree has smaller fruit than I expected.  The apples from the tree are large, but not nearly as large as others that I've seen come from other local Wolf River Trees.  I've seen some in the past that are probably twice the size as the ones from my tree.

I was wondering if this size might be attributed to the tree being young?   Will the tree produce larger fruit as it gets older?

I was also wondering how the climate affects the size of Wolf River apples?   It was very hot here with a dry second half of the summer.  Does anyone else have smaller than usual apples this year?

Apples will vary a lot in size depending on the local climate and also the yearly weather. Another big factor is how many fruits are on the tree. If it's got lots of fruit they will be much smaller than if there are only a few. I cannot answer whether first year's fruits would be smaller.

Thank you for sharing that Thom.  I really appreciate it,  Maybe I did let too many apples on the tree.  It did seem to be a lot for the size after they got larger.  The strange thing is that the largest apples seemed to most prone to getting bad spots on them.  Maybe that was a sign that the tree just didn't have enough vigor to support what it had?  Thank you again!  Tim
