I want to try buckwheat for the first time. How many weeks before the first frost are they planted? What soil does it like?

For a green manure- sow between may and july and till in once it's begun to flower.
For a grain harvest sow roughly 3 months before fall frost and harvest after a killing frost.  Seed hulls will be dark brown by then.

I think both Craig and I missed your location being in the southern hemisphere, at least at first. We have dry summers here so I last planted with the first sufficient rains of early fall (September), and that was on the early side as it can need as little as 28d ays to get something worthwhile for salad greens, grazing or mulch. It seems to do well on most soils that drain decently.
