I knew a guy in California that painted his pickup truck with a roller and a sponge plus he used 5 or 6 different colors of paint. When he buffed it out it was the weirdest paint job I have ever seen but it also was very cool.
There is a paint company called POR15 that makes paint that is self leveling. I did not believe their statement but I purchased some anyway for a project I was working on and they weren't lying. I put it on with a brush and when it was dried it looked like I used a spray gun. It wasn't a car though. LOL
I wish I would have seen this before I used the "roll & tip" method with exterior latex paint on my family's old boat. Apparently the latex can't be wet-sanded smooth, where-as rustoleum can?

Oh well... it's not like it looks terrible.
Yes......it is possible to wet sand and then buff out rustoleum.
That actually looks way better then I would have expected. One of my contractors painted his car with flat black spray paint. We laughed at him until he took a screwdriver and put a nice big scratch on the hood, then he pulled a $2 can of paint out of his glove compartment and made the scratch disappear. His paint job always looks brand new and he only spends about $6 per year to keep it that way.
Students from a local university borrowed my car for the Houston art car parade. This was the result of their efforts, much to the embarrassment of my two teenaged daughters!
