forgot to mention my local and the area in which i'd like to find work...
i'm in north-central PA and would prefer a location in PA or the surrounding states

hi all
i'm a single male in my early 50's with no debt and a strong desire to be closer to nature

ideally i'd like to find someone who needs part-time help with their property, etc., in return for a small wage and a place to call home

i do not claim to be an expert in any one area, but i have experience in a few trades, including basic carpentry, plumbing, septic and electrical, as well as photography, website administration, robotics

also i can run most heavy equipment of any size from very small skid loaders to very large dozers and excavators

i'd love to find a place that is at least somewhat remote, away from the social noise and clutter, preferably with lots of trees and/or water

i could construct my own, small place to live if need be, or would be happy living in a barn, cabin or any other space as long as i have some privacy

don't get me wrong, i like people and i love talking about a very wide variety of subjects, but i also value my privacy and do want to be closer to nature

nothing wierd about me... far as i know anyway ... i'm pretty clean-cut, dependable and have a good work ethic

take care all!

Hi all!
I'm sort of a jack of all trades/MacGyver type who enjoys hands-on work in remote places. I have some experience in several areas, including basic construction, electrical, plumbing, metal working, welding, photography, robotics, mechanical skills, website administration, CAD, heavy equipment and a few others.

I am seeking an opportunity where i can put my skills to good use and earn enough to take care of my expenses, which are very minimal (i have very little debt, no bank accounts and and no bills, other than vehicle insurance). I'm not looking for full-time or labor intensive work, such as allot of concrete or roofing, but i would be willing to put in 15-30 hrs./week on average maintaining existing buildings or, perhaps, building new ones if they are simple projects that i can handle. I probably have more experience in operating heavy equipment than anything else, which i've done mostly for the mining, construction and demolition trades. Though there is allot of work locally in my field of expertise for the gas industry, i have decided long ago that i will never work again in any industry that i feel is destructive to the earth or its inhabitants.

Like most here, i am interested in a reasonably sustainable, off-grid lifestyle with healthy food, clean water and lots of trees. My ideal opportunity would be one that is located in a fairly remote, wooded area with a plentiful supply of clean water and, preferably, a stream which i could use to generate electricity and possibly do other work. You might have some simple structure where i could live (cabin, barn, etc.), or i could build my own.

Having re-educated myself over the last dozen years or so, i would say that i am not of the average mindset, but probably not so different than most here. I enjoy talking about alternative lifestyles and social structures as well as a variety of other topics including historically significant events, alternative energy and technology, and much more.

In my very early 50's and currently located in north central PA, i would be willing to travel at least a few hundred miles for the right opportunity.

1-1.5 events per week, not per day
many of the events are very minor (fire breaks out in a trash can or some such nonsense), but every once in a while it's something bigger, like a leak

the sources i watch on occasion are linked in my post

not an expert by any means, so take it for what it's worth...

Distance from a plant is (very) likely far less important than the prevailing wind direction - while you might be safe 10 mi. away if upwind after an "event", you may not be at 1000 mi. if downwind.

It would appear (and i would say very likely) that some amount of radiation from Fukushima has reached at least the western shore of the U.S.. Certainly the radiation from Chernobyl traveled thousands of miles and, even at that distance after dilution, was apparently at unsafe levels.

With that said, i would posit that your concern is less relevant than you probably think simply because we're all in danger, no matter where we live, and attempting to minimize the risk is largely dependent on the scale of the next accident, especially if you want to remain on the E. coast. I watch a couple of news feeds and, on average, i see about 1 to 1.5 events each week. Of course almost all of them "pose no threat to your safety", right?

not a well expert by any means, but the first thought that comes to mind is keeping the end of the feed pipe off the bottom of the well

other thoughts...

use a laser measuring device? of course you'd have to build a bracket for it so the light reflects off the water and not the casing

a float, a string, a pulley and a weight: tie a float to a string and drop it in the well > the string comes out of the well casing and is run through a pulley > the other end has a (small) weight on it and acts as a gauge
i'm guessing that if the float were the right size and shape, it wouldn't hang up on any of the well plumbing

if you have any really small children... never mind... bad idea

it's late and my mind is working in very strange ways, which is why i must have thought of this [brilliant] idea...

you need a blower, a laptop and a microphone - the blower blows air across the top of the well head > the microphone picks up the tone > the laptop determines the frequency of the tone and, with that, you know how much of the well casing is empty LOL

hello all!

here is a reasonably diverse guy, in my early 50's, looking for a quiet place to call home, preferably in a wooded area (the more remote the better) with a source for clean water

as my mom is getting up there in years, i don't want to stray too far from PA, but would consider anything in the NE region

though i am not looking for labor intensive, full-time work, i am certainly willing to help out where needed - maybe like 10-20 hrs. a week, give or take, with the potential to earn a small wage for extra work or special projects

i am trustworthy, dependable, have a good work ethic and i love working outdoors (a resume, with references, is available upon request)

although i would not call myself an expert in any particular area, i have experience in a number of fields, including...

* heavy equipment operator
* basic construction, carpentry and demolition
* basic electrical, plumbing and septic
* basic woodworking and rough/rustic furniture making
* knowledge of most power/hand tools, including chainsaws, splitters, etc.
* welding (arc/mig), cutting (plasma/gas), fabrication
* landscaping
* photography
* website and basic web-server administration (LAMP)
* hobby software development for the Windows platform
* basic CAD experience and research, development and prototyping of various mechanical systems
* some electronics experience
* robotics and remotely controlled vehicles

i have spent much of my life working in professions that are destructive to the earth (surface mining especially) and though i could easily be making a nice income in my area (shale gas), i refuse to do this kind of work any longer

i enjoy living a very simply life, close to nature, and require very little in the way of living accommodations - i suspect that what most people would call a shanty, i would call a castle, and i could build my own "castle" if you don't have one available

i am interested in alternative energy, including solar and water, and the wood mass heaters that are discussed here

unfortunately i don't have allot of experience with growing food, outside of small gardening, but i am willing to learn!

current and previous hobbies include small boating, light hiking, rock climbing, spelunking (cave exploration), urban exploration and photography

you can watch a couple videos of stuff i've been involved on Viemo and YouTube

i worked with a gal a while back - before i met her she was a single parent, living off-grid, in a jungle, home-schooling 2 kids and raising a baby

those 3 kids were incredible

the question, in my opinion, is not whether living off-grid is detrimental to kids, but rather the other way around when they have access to all the 'technology' to keep them 'entertained'
