I don't meal plan before shopping, I use a web site / app called Pepperplate to keep a list of pantry items I want to maintain.  The family knows when they use something to grab a new one from the pantry,  and then I simply inventory my pantry before leaving for the grocery, approximately every two weeks when I get paid.

My list will identify how many of each item I want to keep on the shelf and if I have that number, I delete it from this weeks list.  If there is a sale or coupon, I usually buy items that are shelf-stable, then I organize my list (in the app) by the store I plan to buy it at.  BJ's, food lion, Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Wal-Mart, etc.  If I have something on the list that happens to be really expensive, I may delete it and try to get it next shopping run.

Sometimes, if I'm making something "special", I will add that recipe to my shopping list to ensure I have the necessary items.

This works for me and my family.
Good luck.

30 year IT person here for a Fortune 500 company specifically teaching DevOps.

We don't really have a "homestead" only 1/4 acre but we have peach and pear trees that we process and pressure can the juice, jelly, and butter off of.  We have some small garden beds and a 10 x 30 ft green house.  No livestock, possibly quail in the future, just not sure yet.

I'm in Virginia and I use plastic 55 gal drums with no issues. They stay full all winter and do freeze but the barrels handle it. I did crack the spigot once because I used a brass one but that has been the only real downside.

Its poop. The composting process should break down most toxins, if your really concerned about it, mix it with other non-bat compost to reduce any concentrations. It shouldn't be a problem though.

I have a nesco that I have used to dehydrate fruit and jerky for years with no issue. I wish there was a timer so I could turn it off at a certain time, sometimes the jerky gets too dry. Other than that I love it.
