Hello Permies,
Allow me to first say that while this story is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
I first discovered Permies in 2013 when I realized the Spousal Unit and I were not going to achieve the goal of functioning Homestead. For the most part, I have been operating solo since July 2022.
I worked as a Field Engineer for 35 years. It has been said "To err is human. To really muck it up, you have to be a Field Engineer." it then follows that I can fix almost anything that I broke. As well as anything someone else broke.
I like to grow things. I usually start my plants from seeds or from cuttings. Better yet is to discover a volunteer plant to rehome.
I am getting better at propagating woody plants from cutting.
It thrills me to extend the growing season using cold frames, shade covers and soils misting to cool plants during July and August.
I enjoy building things. I have cut and raised 2 timber framed structures. I wish my welding skills matched my wood working skills.
I harvest firewood from dead standing, storm falls or wind damaged culls.
Though I have Central Heat and Air Conditioning, I heat my home with a woodstove.
I support the local Rural Electric Cooperative so I am grid tied with backup capacity to get through an extended blackout.
I enjoy Fiber Optic Broadband Internet thanks to the dedication of the Electric Cooperative to it's member customers.
I keep a small herd of laying hens and sell the excess eggs at a fair price.
I donate my garden excess to a local Meals for Needy Kitchen.
