Permies.com about us John Suavecito, Julia Winter, Paul Wheaton, Burra Maluca, Jocelyn Campbell, Cassie Langstrat

Welcome to permies! Permies is a place for gentle souls to discuss permaculture and homesteading, all the time. It is a community, as well as a forum that is rich with wealth of information and assistance--made possible by lovely people like YOU!

permaculture and homesteading, all the time

Permies was started by Paul Wheaton in 2005, but this was not his first rodeo in managing forums! As a software engineer, he’d been managing forums way back in the 90s. Yes, there were forums back then--they just looked quite a bit different! In 2000, he took over Code Ranch, a forum devoted to java and other types of programming. You can find out more about those early forums HERE!

Paul Wheaton master gardener, javaranch, cover of Missoulan, Duke of Permaculture, Ted Talk

After he gained his Master Gardener certification in 1997, he wanted to learn even more and share what he knew, but the existing permaculture and homesteading forums just weren’t a good fit. He had his own website, richsoil.com where he shared articles about everything from cast iron to chickens to diatomaceous earth. But, he wasn’t about to stop there. He made a youtube channel and his made his own forums--these very same ones!

The forum is owned by Paul, who pays the bills to keep permies running, and it runs in the red (you can Buy some PIE, purchase or sell something on the digital market, advertise on permies, or feed the empire in other ways to help keep permies up and running!).

Permies is run by over 100 volunteers, who are chosen to be moderators because of their niceness and passion to help others. Our volunteer staff (called gardeners and stewards ) lovingly squish spam, answer questions, and share their knowledge. By working together, they make this site a safe place for gentle souls to talk about permaculture and homesteading, without being lambasted by trolls and people who "know better."
