Mulching guinea grass

Hi all! Quick question: can I lay down chest high guinea grass (not gone to seed) as mulch without chopping it up first? I have been chopping it but it takes days and lots of gasoline. Its to prep a bare soil plot where I am putting a small food forest and medicinal garden.

Yes, you can crop & drop guinea grass, but it just takes longer for it to decompose. I find that the more it gets walked on after chop & drop, the faster it will decompose. But it will be more difficult to walk upon than chopped grass. I've chop & dropped it, but took the time to organize it when I laid it down so that I could walk there later without killing myself. As you most likely already know, it's the clumpy bases that make walking difficult.
