monkeys!

I'm deep in the mountains of central japan and we have monkeys, lots and lots of monkeys. Its common to see a family of monkeys running down the street with a daikon under each arm and whatever veggies they can carry. They're not afraid of people and they seem to find a way into the most bomb proof of gardens. Anybody have any tips?

are you using electrified wire, because I can't think of anything other than a "haha" moat that might keep them out. Your playing against one of the most opportunistic and dextrous vegetation predator's known to permaculture. It's practically a cage you have to build or life with allot of poisonous snakes in your habitat, the only thing sensible I can think of in a forested situation is tree snake habitat. If it's a small garden then you can net yourself like they do to stop blackbirds in other countries, if you can electrify area's and bait them with easy pickings they develop a fear of the color of the wire. You can use this color elsewhere where you cant run the wire, someone will eventually figure it out and then you have to move your bait to another real wire and start the training all over again.

Monkeys are the hardest pest in the world to deal with ethically. Not many here in permies have sufficient experience with monkeys since most people here do not have these in our back yards.

Monkeys will steal your purse and then put the vegetables in it. The only thing as impractical as it would be to be would be to build the "haha" dry moat around the area and prune back the tree's. It's diagrammed in the permaculture designers manual. It's for stopping elephants and rhino's and is how zoo's all around the world are built. But like I said in the first post, it's not even remotely likely in a community situation, but there are solution's to even monkeys even if they don't work for us.
