Plant ID Help

Hey all,

Anyone know what this plant is? My in-laws found it growing in an area they were weeding to get ready for planting some herbs. I wasn't there so I only heard about it later when they sent me this picture. I couldn't tell from the picture.

I think, that the plant might be some type of willow herb, but the brown bits look like young mushrooms of some sort rather than a part of the plant. If I found that in my garden I would say they were young brown puffballs but your parents area might have very different flora to mine.
