I patched up my lawn this year and noticed some grass that I am not too fond of. Can you tell me what kind of grass this is and how to get rid of it. I think i will dig it out in the fall and seed or sod unless there is an easier way. Thanks for your help.
Mark, I don't have an answer for you but I'm hoping someone else does. Could you possibly dig up a bit to show the root structure and distinguish this grass apart from the other a little? Maybe that would help someone identify it for you.
Also, your local extension office should be able to tell you if you have one nearby.
Thanks for the reply. I will dig up a bit to show the root structure. I am also going to bring some in to my local nursery. If I find anything out I will report back.
Looks like Tall Fescue. I have it in my yard. You have to dig it out and reseed that area (with a seed mix that doesn't contain any percentage of Tall Fescue)
Thanks. I have a pic of the root system that I haven't uploaded yet but I think you are right that it is tall fescue. I will dig it up this fall and re seed as you suggested.
If it is not a Big area maybe you could just cover it in plastic and let it cook out for you. Clear or black plastic will heat up and kill what is under it, might be easier and more effective than trying to dig all of it out. Three months of being covered should do the job.
