A few years ago I was really struggling with understanding patterns and how to interact with them in my designs.

One day, a friend suggested for a work related project a series of lectures given by the conductor Leonard Bernstein on Whither Music? “The unanswered question”. In it he ponders the fundamental question on why we humans are affected so much by this phenomena and why it even exists at all. To explore it he jumps between disciplines, from mathematics to aesthetics to physics and mostly making analogies to linguistics. Somewhere along the way the whole thing clicked for me and I understood the power of a multidisciplinary approach to truly “getting” or diving into these deep kinds of concepts.

Years later after moving to the jungle and having done a bunch of stuff that are usually disconnected, while planting a tree, I suddenly felt that click again and went back to the pattern subject and out of the blue made complete sense to me.

Have you ever experienced this type of “Aha” moment?

And here is a link for the first lecture of the series in case that pushes a button :)

And that's when I woke up screaming. What does it mean tiny ad?
