Hawthorns seem to be difficult to key out...
I seem to have 2 species on the properties: On makes little reddish berries, seem pretty typical hawthorn.  The other catches my attention much more.  It makes golf ball sized green fruits that look like apples.  I don't see any pictures online that look like the fruit.  I keep thinking that the fruit must be edible... I've tasted them, nothing too exciting, but I also have not gotten sick.
Any one have any idea what they might be?  Leaves look typical hawthorn, but "big" green fruit.

Also, on a side note, some neighbors think I'm nuts for selecting FOR hawthorn on the property... the way I see it, hawthorn don't grow supper tall and then fall on my fences and buildings (like the popular and soft maple that are so common on my property)  Will I regret having a thorny stand of trees on my property in the future?
