Long story short, it turns out that it takes a tree 10-20 years to start capturing more carbon than they give off, depending on the species. Once they reach that point, they're the best at it. Luckily, it's more probable that ground cover plants- grasses, wildflowers & forest floor species- do an excellent job in the short term, until those trees can reach that point.
