interesting strategies. have you considered using the cedar pillows during the summer, too? direct midday sun can be pretty intense, and a little insulation up top might make things easier on the bees.

I think you make a good point, but I would rather allow the air to freely circulate. Maybe an insulated top cover would be better...

I have some trees that shades a portion of the day, so that might be why I am ok.
