Has anyone heard of those tree protectors that are barbed on the outside? Here's a video with some:

They used a pretty small sample size in their study. I would like to know more about fixed-knot vs. "arborshield" type protectors if anyone here has any experience. I think those arborshield ones would be very expensive here, and difficult to move. I'm leaning more towards building the fixed-knot kind with locally available materials, and perhaps adding a ring or two of barbed wire along the outside if necessary.

I appreciate any insight.
