Scott,
I am wondering, what are the options for doing very low cost microhydro; especially DIY? I'm asking specifically w.r.t. the hydro-unit itself for low head high flow. Basically, what are the options for do it yourself plans or low cost purchasable units?
Doesn't need to be big, even 10's or 100's of watts would be awesome.
Thats the general situation. If you want to get into my specific situation I've got two site options:
1. Creek which runs for a week or so after a rain; maybe 1/3 to 2/3 of the year depending on the year. Around 100 gpm and max 2-10'. Not something one would usually consider unless it was very cheap to do, in which case its worth it. Especially since its 100' from the house. It usually is running when my
solar panel is not.
2. Creek that runs year round bottoming out around 100-200 gpm in the summer dry period and maxing out as an area of fast moving
water 20' by 75' in area. I can get max 4' head but the less the better as its a wide channel to dam. Two main problems: its 1000' from the house and how to keep the system from washing away during the gully washers. Though we may build a house closer to it.
Cheaper the better. I already have a sealed 3600RPM 3.3 KW AC PMG head that could be used and could make this
project easier, I just need a way to drive it. But may even be oversized for this project. And I'm open to other ideas. Even something generating 10's or 100's of watts would be helpful.
