I would like to amend green roof growth medium with biochar to improve water infiltration and thermal mass. Is it possible at all to produce biochar using a rocket mass stove heater. I imagine one could design a rocket mass stove heater to have valves which shut off the combustion to oxygen, as biochar needs a oxygen depleted environment. Any thoughts? Are there any posts I should look at?

You could probably put a metal container on top of the RMH bell with a pressure relief valve and make your biochar.

Phew, if we're talking indoors, that seems messy. The cook-off components of char production are nasty and smelly, unless you burn them.

Maybe there could be a secret compartment underneath the primary burn chamber, where coals could be diverted for biochar and finished with the heat of the ongoing burn?
