I found this growing in my compost pile. It has pink gills that turn dark brown with age, has a veil that leaves a ring around a fibrous stalk...Smells great and looks like it may be delicious. Can anyone confirm what this is? Thanks!
Your description sounds right for agaricus. Remember that commercial agaricus are a white cap mutation and that the wild-type agaricus is almost always tan to brown (like the non-mutant "Portabello'). Before you saute them up, be sure to double and triple check your identification, as some members of the agaricus genus are poisonous. (But you said it smells good, so that rules out the poisonous Agaricus californicus.)
Thanks, I have been reading a lot of descriptions that tell me they are white to tan but this one is dark like the Portabello. A little more research and it's the pan and butter for these mushrooms.
They look like Agaricus to me too. One telltale sign of the poisonous ones is whether any part of it, especially the base of the stem or edge of the cap, flushes bright to deep yellow when cut or bruised. Some will have a strong solvent odor too.
Upon further research, I have discovered that this may not be the Spring Agaricus. It's looking more like the Portobella or Brown Crimini. This one seems to be much more brown and 'flaky' looking, whereas the Spring types seem to be more on the white side.
Tastes great, too...
Thanks for the feedback!
I don't get it. A whale wearing overalls? How does that even work? It's like a tiny ad wearing overalls.
