I am new to Permies and really wanted to share my story with you all. Perhaps it will help someone..

For the past 10 years or so, I have suffered on and off from an asthmatic condition. I have never been diagnosed with chronic asthma and it doesn't bother me all the time. However certain household irritants that I can identify do seem to bother me at certain times. Then there are environmental irritants that bother me and that I have no control over. During these bad episodes, I would visit the allergy/asthma MD who would prescribe prednisone and inhalers. The inhalers ALWAYS made me feel worse than the condition itself! I never could understand that? But I guess since the prednisone covered up the inflammation - the inhalers "seemed" to work after I finished a course of the prednisone.

About a year ago I had a very bad asthmatic episode brought on by some construction and painting at my "JOB". I once again visited the MD and he once again loaded me up with all that crap. However, I was reading through the informational papers inside the inhaler box and found out that they can cause instant death! I couldn't believe it. And when I used the NEW inhalers this time- which the MD told me were samples - I felt worse than I had ever felt before. And I also found out that these inhalers can cause heart damage. I decided right then and there that I had to find an alternative solution before the next episode.

Move forward to the present. Back in June for some reason I was having a very hard time breathing and feeling that heavy feeling in the chest again.. Uh oh - What do I do??? I contemplated this decision for several weeks - while suffering every single day and night. I then decided that I needed to find either a Homeopathic Dr or a Naturopathic Dr. So I found a Naturopathic Dr who told me that I had weak lungs that needed to be built back up using cow lung tissue. He said that a cow's lung tissue can somehow get to where it's needed in your lungs by ingesting it. ( I wasn't really sure what all that meant..) But he prescribed me a supplement containing desiccated bovine lung PMG extract and magnesium citrate. (which has been around, at least, since the 1920’s.) That same day, I started taking the supplements. My lungs opened up that evening and I was able to sleep that night without feeling like I was suffocating. He told me that he usually puts people on this medication for 3 months. And I feel great and I can BREATHE normally now!! And I did not have to use any inhalers.

I hope my story is a catalyst, for helping others explore alternative therapies, for their asthmatic conditions.

Hi Lisa, welcome to permies! I too live in North Carolina, and I am looking to find a functional medicine doctor in this area. Can you give me information about your doctor? He sounds very knowledgeable.

Hello Amedean,
And thank you for your message.

As I mentioned, my doctor is an ND or Naturopathic Doctor. I found him by searching on the web. I looked all over NC - you can't really limit yourself by location because there are not that many of them out there. I first spoke to (3) over the phone, within a 100 mile radius of my home, before selecting him. I prefer not referring anyone to a specific doctor. They all have different practices. You just really need to find the ones that are closest to your home and check them out. Then many will do free telephone consultations. Each of them also has a different fee structure. It's something that you have to research yourself so you can make the best informed decision. But I think you are on the right path in searching for a doctor with this background!

Good luck in your search!

Lisa
