Hoping this is a hazelnut? From the images I have been looking at its similar but nothing I would say is an exact match. If so can anyone point to a good source on caring for them. Behind my house I have a wooded area with older oak, maple and walnut trees. Dead branches falling and the trees look in bad shape. Hoping I can rehab somewhat. Thanks for any feedback.
This looks more like witch hazel (Hamamelis) to me. Those are either the buds or the seedpods, and the leaves I see are rounded-toothed (true hazels are sharp-pointed toothed) Spidery yellow blooms should open pretty soon in the fall if it's the common Eastern wild species, or else in midwinter-spring if it's a more uncommon one or one of the introduced Asiatic species....
