workshops 2014 and 2015

If we get a good PA I think we can do a dozen workshops a year. Otherwise I think it will be tough to do 3 - we're just trying to do too much.

But for the next day I would like to focus on what workshops should we offer?

At the moment, we are thinking of:

A) 800 square foot wofati house
B) wofati freezer
C) earthworks
D) hugelkultur
E) introducing a creek
F) plant species / wild edibles / seed balls
G) setting up paddock shift for chickens
H) setting up paddock shift for pigs
I) farmstead meatsmith pork
J) farmstead meatsmith beef
K) farmstead meatsmith poultry
L) rocket mass heaters
M) porta-kitchen
N) porta-kitchen -> rocket canning kitchen
O) green woodworking part 1 (mallet, spoon, coat rack, shaving horse)
P) green woodworking part 2 (lathe, chair, table)

Right now the idea is to list everything you can think of. What are some other ideas?

-Harvesting Lumber for Construction - Mobile milling, the power cart, cutting shakes.
-Drilling a Well and Building the Drill Rig

Q) harvesting trees: chainsaws and maintenance; roundwood stuff; sawmill stuff; splitting poles; shakes; ...
R) how to build a solar cart; installing a permanent solar panel; heliostats / solar tracking; batteries; inverters
S) multiple techniques for drilling wells


I think it might also be good to clarify different types of workshops:

steel: we're going to try to all learn together
bronze: bringing in one local expert
silver: bringing in one global expert
gold: bringing in multiple global experts

For sure. I think you make this known up front, so people know what they are getting and what to expect.

I don't know if you have thought of it, but there may be interest, especially from more local people, where you could buy an annual pass or membership to these workshop. One price gets them all at a discount.

What about something involving the permaculture homestead bathroom - compost heated shower, composting toilets. Maybe even making soap with goat milk etc.

There seem to be a lot of terrible compost toilet designs out there, so good knowledge would be valuable to spread.

As an aside, I think workshops are great, but they are far beyond any budget I can see myself putting together. The cost of the workshop itself is not the problem, the travel would double or triple that though. As luck would have it, I learn better by reading than at workshops, through podcasts or videos. Not a put down of these resources at all, every one learns different, my wife is a workshop person for example.

We would love to come out from South Dakota sometime next June or beyond for 1st choice) a rocket mass heaters workshop 2nd choice) raising bees & chicken paddock 3rd choice) wofati.

Well, OK, really, would love to come out for all of those - but if time/resources won't allow that, must have rocket mass heater knowledge.

I'm just now completing my permaculture design certification online course taught by Karl Schmidt of Glacial Lakes Permaculture. Karl studied with Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia. So would be happy to work on projects for/with you all while we're there.

As you can see a lot of the brainstorming has already been fleshed out while also providing room to expand into territory not conceived of yet. As an additional function stacking measure familiarity with DDS will go a long way torwards scoring a date with any sexy librarian you may run across in your research. (There's no reason this can't be fun)

Right now the idea is to come up with a list of all the things that we might want to have a workshop for. The sky is the limit!

And, of course, we will try to video stuff. So even if you cannot come, then we might be able to share some of this stuff later.

(in regard to "R") I wonder about having some sort of workshop where we bring together Steven Harris (batteries, chargers, inverters, etc.), Caleb Larson (solar, our solar cart, hot water, etc.), Dan Rojas (GREENPOWERSCIENCE, fresnel lenses, steam generation, DIY solar panels) and Steve Heckeroth (electric tractors, solar panel inventor, artist, etc.). With so many bigs under one roof, it would be freakishly expensive, but it would also be freakishly educational. We might even try to set up some things to accomplish during the workshops.

Mark Vander Meer will be here Friday and we are going to talk about what workshops he might be willing to lead.
