Hello,

I have been lurking around for awhile, the posts here on this forum are very inspiring. I am thinking about converting my fireplace to a mass heater, one idea popped in my mind looks like the attached drawing.

- Basically, it means hitting the wide part of the chimney, I am not sure if the heat will be conducted to the stone surface outside the chimney in the family room.

- One of my other concerns is that I am not sure if the wide part of the chimney is lined with fire brick or normal brick.

- If it is normal brick, will the temperature be so high that it makes the brick crack?

Could you guys help with the questions?

Thank you!

Frank

While you are still in the thinking phase of your project have you thought about converting your fireplace to a Rumford fireplace?

Yes, I did. It is much simpler but there is no mass, I would like to have some mass and the idea of reusing the existing fireplace's mass is fansinating, I am just not sure if it is realistic.
