Gardening in the city has brought up some obstacles, and right now there's the fact that even if I get all the lead out of the soil here, more will be joining it shortly as there is old lead peeling off the house. My landlady would love to file to get a loan to do a lead abatement but it's a big hassle for her, given that she is blind. And I have no idea how she could possible afford to pay back a loan.
So I thought I'd put it out there to permies and see if anyone has any creative ideas or if anyone's ever done a crowdfunding for this kind of thing or anything. thanks!
While taking care of peeling lead paint can be costly, phytoremediation of the soil doesn't have to be. Mustard is one of many plants that have been shown to do significant uptake of lead. This reference will give you a better idea of how to go about with a phytoremediation project.
