Please forgive me if this has been discussed somewhere.I am new to these things. Someone please tell me why my idea won't work. I am building a greenhouse with an attached adobe barn for a cow, two goats and some chickens. There will be a 1/2 adobe and 1/2 plastic wall between the barn and the greenhouse. Would it make sense to put a rocket mass heater in the barn to burn the methane and ammonia . (along with wood of course )from the animals and vent it into the greenhouse? Im not sure about burning gasses this way. IF it worked it would also bring some heat from the animals thought the heater into the greenhouse. Please tell me why this is a crazy idea.

i think i would forget about the farm farts. lol i think you would have to capture and condense the methane, and that would be a chore. maybe its easier than i think though? i remember about 20 years ago an amish blew himself up with his hog barn, so it does happen on its own. all he did was open the door with lantern in hand!

now if you put the rocket stove in the green house and the last part of the mass, through the wall, and into the barn..... you get safe heat. i dont think any fire is good to have in a barn with hay, straw, and animals myself. just tote the cow pies around to green house and burn them.

Spero : Welcome to Permies and to the Rocket Stove and Also the Greenhouse Forum threads . You are not the 1st person to come here to discus this topic.

Please find the Greenhouse forum Threads and Clickon "How to reuse the CO2 from Exhaust in the Greenhouse ", I've bumped it up to the top of the pile !

There is a little paperwork and 'how to use the Search engine' stuff too, with a Properly built structure to the north side of your green house, Your Animals
can be counted on to keep themselves warm, and provide supplemental heat to your green house !

For the Good of the Crafts! Think like fire, Flow like Gas, don't be the Marshmallow, as always, Your comments and questions are Solicited and welcome! Big AL

Thanks for your prompt assistance. I don't actually need the stove in the barn its not all that cold where I am in north India. We do have light night frosts in the winter months. I do wonder however about how permeable the wall could be between the barn and the greenhouse. eg. should it be completely sealed, or would a few cracks allow some of the animals' heat and co2 to enter the greenhouse. How much damage would be done to the plants from a small amount of barn gasses. How much heat is transferred thought the 1/2 plastic wall? I suppose I can experiment a little when the time comes. Thanks again for your comments.
