We’ve just rescued four lovely Aloaca boys. One had just died and we’re heartbroken. The vet has confirmed anaemia as the cause of death. Two of the others are showing signs and the vet has sdvised us to worm them, which we gave done. If a human was anaemic, they would be put on iron tablets. Is there any such supplements we can add to their food to prevent the anaemia?
Worming will remove the problem and allows them to get better on their own which is the best way.
Looking into prevention will help in the future.
Diet is important. Hay without too much nitrogen (alpha and clover for example) helps them achieve balanced digestion. The salt lick will probably have iodine.
Depending on your soil, minerals might be needed. Your local feed store will have a mix for camelids. The llama tex should have most of what they need.
If they are having problems chewing or very low on body mass, adding some flatted barely to their daily text will help. One of our rescue llamas needed beat pulp mash which is often used for horses. But our llama had no teeth so we had to chop the hay for him. Both these have iron and b vitamins so it's good for stress recovery.
